World Cleanup 2012

Cleanup project: Mes Darom – 21.04.2012 (All day)
Actual number of volunteers: 210000
Amount of waste collected: 1500 tons
Short overview
The cleanup was organized already for the fifth year.
Organizing
Structure. Our organization is called „Mes Darom“. We are working on a voluntary bases since 2008 when the first cleanup action was launched. There are about 200 team members in the organization.
Partners. We had three types of partners: 1. Public institutions like municipalities, forest enterprises etc were responsible for the local arrangements; 2. Non-governmental organizations –members of these organizations became coordinators during the cleanup; 3. Private companies - contributed financially (e.g. instruments), workers became coordinators during the cleanup.
Volunteers. Around 210 000 people and 200 organizations participated in the cleanup. There were 60 non-governmental organizations registered.
Logistics. Supported by municipalities and other local institutions
Waste
Short overview of mapping. We had two-step mapping: 1. Cleanup points were suggested by local municipalities. They had the best knowledge about their polluted places. 2. Participants were able to suggest cleanup points too. The polluted places were identified and marked by smartphones. Finally the list of cleanups was placed on our website - http://www.mesdarom.lt/vilnius.html
Estimated amount of garbage: This year we did not account the area of waste, We picked up 1500 tones of waste. Next year we are planning to measure the cleaned territory.
Waste types. Different Lithuanian regions had different opportunities for collecting the waste separately. The biggest cities used bags of different colors e.g. green color garbage bags were filled with electronic devices while red bags were used for municipal waste. At first we had an idea to separate all kind of waste in different colored bags. Unfortunately it was not done because we did not receive as many bags as necessary.
